WE ARE STOKED TO HAVE YOU ON BOARD WITH US!

This little wiki is supposed to help you with all of your questions as a general guideline. We regularly update this wiki with the answers to the most frequently asked questions. If you don’t find your answer here, get in touch with us.

For planning your trip, we suggest you to arrive up to 3 days prior to the cruise in Barcelona. Most cruisers will do so, to already get to know each other and to experience the Spanish beach town at its best.
We would also recommend to stick around our destination up to a few weeks or a month after the cruise so you have time to explore Brazil and celebrate New Year’s with us in Rio.
In order to find the best deals to get to Barcelona and continue your travels from Brazil, we recommend flight search engines like Google flights, Skyscanner or Kiwi.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Departure

Our journey starts on the 19th November. The ship will leave at 5pm, check-in will be between 11:00am and 3.30pm. The check-in process can take a while, so make sure you arrive early if you only make your way to Barcelona on the day of departure. If you check in, you can have free lunch on board.

This is the location of the port:
Barcelona
Puerto de Barcelona
Adossat Quay

You can access this farthest part of the port by taxi or by a shuttle bus leaving from the monument of Christopher Columbus. For further info on how to get to the port, read this article full of useful info on the different options.

We recommend having a printed version of your boarding documents on hand, as you might be asked to show them when entering the port territory.

Arrival

We arrive at Recife at 07.00 in the morning on 1st December. We suggest not to make early flight arrangements because disembarkation can take a while. We will tell you all about the check-out process at our closing ceremony on the last evening.

This is the location of port:
Terminal Maritimo de Passageiros Do Porto do Recife
Avenida Alfredo Lisboa,Armazém 7,Bairro do Recife

In general we can encourage you to stick around for about two-four weeks after the cruise and discover Brazil together with us. For more details on our plans after arrival, scroll down to the ‘Meet-up Plans’ section.

Ticket

We will send you your ticket 2 weeks before departure. Although Pullmantur implied that tickets on smartphones should be sufficient, we still recommend printing your tickets. It may also help when accessing the port territory.

Facebook Group

We have launched the official trip-related Facebook group, where you guys can connect, exchange travel plans, and get in touch with the workshop organizers. Join the group here.

Visas

Make sure you check the current visa requirements in effect with your country of origin. Nomad Cruise cannot be held liable for insufficient visas. You must research if with your nationality you need a visa to enter the territory of the European Union and Brazil. In Cape Verde we can go ashore without a visa.

Please note that unless you come from one of the visa exempt countries, you must obtain a visa BEFORE entering Brazil. Citizens of some countries are eligible to apply for an electronic visa (e.g. US citizens), but you have to do your own research about which rule implies to you.

To research visa requirements we recommend
VisaHQ.

Insurance

Nomad Cruise does not provide insurance with your ticket. You are obliged to insure that you have sufficient health, travel and accident insurance coverage. We mean it – medical assistance on board costs a fortune otherwise.

Vaccinations

Nomad Cruise cannot be held liable for vaccines. Please research the necessary vaccinations according to your travel itinerary, for example here.

Please note, that there is a large, ongoing outbreak of yellow fever in multiple states of Brazil. Check the affected areas here and make sure you get the vaccination in case you’re planning to visit any of them.

Some countries require yellow fever vaccines after visiting Brazil.

Safety Info

Brazil has a reputation as an unsafe place, and while it’s not entirely undeserved, it is often overblown. You should not let fear overshadow your stay! Brazil is an overall safe country for most tourist and if you use common sense and take the precautions listed below, you are very unlikely to come to any harm – although you might still have something stolen somewhere along the way. The tips in this section apply everywhere, but be particularly alert in Rio, Salvador, Recife and in remote areas.

  • Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling to tourist locations,  crowded public venues, or when going to major transportation centers or on public transportation, especially at night.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry, or showing luxury products as cameras, phones, ipads, laptops.
  • Don’t carry large sums of money and consider wearing a money belt.
  • Leave your passport and other valuables in a safe place but carry a copy and another form of photo ID.
  • Don’t take anything unnecessary to city beaches (bathing suit, towel, small amount of cash – nothing else!).
  • If threatened, hand over your valuables without resistance. Don’t try to be a hero!
  • Bank and credit card fraud is common, including card cloning from ATMs. Keep sight of your card at all times. Use ATMs inside buildings and before doing so, be very aware of your surroundings.
  • After dark, don’t ever walk along empty streets, in deserted parks or on urban beaches and stay in groups.
  • Use taxis after sunset instead of walking.
  • Avoid Favelas at any cost – If you’re using GPS navigation, whether by car or on foot, make sure that the suggested route doesn’t take you into a favela.

BEFORE THE CRUISE

Join Homebase Global in Barcelona

We are super excited that our new project, Homebase Global is taking place very very soon in Barcelona. If you feel you could use some productive time right before the cruise, join us there between 2-18 November. We will take care of everything else, so that you can focus on your work, while meeting cool, like-minded locals and connecting with an amazing crowd already before setting sail. All you need to do is head over to the shop and book your spot to join 100+ other nomads for an incredible time in Barcelona!

Luggage Restrictions

You may bring as much luggage on board as your flight company allows you to. You can’t bring your pet, your car or your bike. You will check your luggage in during check-in. It will then be dropped in front of your cabin door.

Packing List

We have been on six cruises by now, and they all have been a little bit different. Our recommendations are based on our experience, and obviously, you know best what you will need on top of that.

For the Conference

  • Bring your own pens and paper. Yes, we’re all super digital and stuff, but honestly, taking notes on paper sometimes is just more convenient.
  • Bring your own power adapters (Type B and Type C)
  • Bring a multi-socket.
  • Bring all the material you may need for a meetup or mastermind session. We will provide the material for speakers of the curated program.

For Cruise Life

  • Bring jackets, wraps or thin scarves for the evening jam sessions on board.
You can wear what you wish to wear, however after 7 pm they don’t allow flip flops or bathing shorts in the restaurant. There will be at least one Captain’s Dinner, where many of the general passengers will dress up more or less glamorously. You choose whether or not you want to go all suit and tie or cocktail dress.
  • There have been themed nights before. ‘All white’, ‘Tropical’, ‘Pirates’, ‘Rock’n’Roll’, ’70ies’ and so on. We usually don’t stick to the rules more than necessary, but if you really care: prepare for this.
  • Bring one or two swimsuits. With all the networking and socializing and conference going on, you will enjoy some downtime at the pool.
  • Bring sunscreen.
  • Bring your own meds. We are not allowed to give out any medication. We recommend a carry-on pharmacy with bandaids, cold-meds, Ibuprofen, Voltaren, motion sickness meds, and the like. Bring hand sanitizer. Pullmantur puts up dispensers as well, and we highly encourage using it. In a narrow space like a boat, germs spread quickly, and it’s on you to do what you can to stay healthy. For the female members of the group, we recommend bringing tampons. Everything you have to buy on board will be ridiculously expensive. And parents: bring enough diapers.
  • Bring books, music, small board games.

For Spain and Cape Verde

  • Don’t forget to print your ticket for entering the port and for check-in.
  • Spain is the place to be within Europe in November. Starting out from Barcelona, we will have temperatures sometimes exceeding 20 °C, and an average temperature of 17–18 °C during the day and 8–9 °C at night, and it will only get warmer as we will be sailing towards the Canary Islands and Cape Verde.
  • The currency in Spain is Euros. In Cape Verde, they have their own currency called escudo.

For Brazil

  • Prepare for some humid, tropical weather, that varies depending on the places you visit.
  • The currency in Brazil is Brazilian real.

Speakers' Dinner

Two nights before departure (on the 17th November) we are organizing an exclusive dinner for speakers and workshop leaders. This special event is a great opportunity to get to know each other already before we set sail, and to engage in exciting conversations with fellow speakers.

Please book your flights accordingly – we can’t wait to see you there!

Flights

For planning your trip, we suggest you to arrive up to 3 days prior to the cruise in Barcelona. Most cruisers will do so, to already get to know each other and to experience the Spanish beach town at its best.

We would also recommend to stick around our destination up to a few weeks or a month after the cruise so you have time to explore Brazil and celebrate New Year’s with us in Rio.

In order to find the best deals to get to Barcelona and continue your travels from Brazil, we recommend flight search engines like Google flights, Skyscanner or Kiwi.

Accommodation in Barcelona

If you arrive early and will stay in Barcelona for a few days, head over to Gracia, a hip part of town, where the Homebase event will take place as well.
Casa Gracia has some great offers for dorms, single or double rooms, apartments and it’s also equipped with large common areas to get some last minute work done. The best part is that if you book on their website and apply the promo code “CASACRUISE”, you’ll get 15% off the price and free breakfast.
If you would like to be close to all the action, but prefer to stay in a hotel, we recommend the Gallery Hotel**** on the famous Passeig de Gracia.

If you only arrive to Barcelona one day before departure, we recommend you to stay close to the port either in Pars Teatro, a vintage design hostel or in Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel*****.

Also check other offers on Booking.com for current offers and if you would like to share an Airbnb you’re more than welcome to team up with other participants when we open our Facebook group 30 days prior to departure.

Farewell Party

It’s become a Nomad Cruise tradition to organize a farewell evening the night before departure. It’s a great opportunity to meet the first nomads so we highly recommend you to join. We will share all details about the party in our Facebook group that we open 30 days before departure.

ON BOARD

Meals

There are three main meals. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style. There is a big variety of fruits, veggies, salads, meats, starchy sides and desserts. We dine in the à-la-carte restaurant. You can choose from a couple of different options for a three-course meal.

There is always at least one vegetarian option, and gluten and lactose free menus have also been implemented on board. In addition to the offers on this menu, the culinary team will be happy to adjust dishes from the daily regular menu to your dietary needs, always with a 24 hour in advance order to your Waiter/Maître.

If you are vegan, gluten and/or lactose intolerant, please let us know beforehand so we can communicate this to the ship and order your meals separately.

Drink Packages

All basic drinks on the cruise are included. However, you can enjoy high-end brands if you opt for the premium package that you can arrange to book on board at the reception.

Wifi Quality

Let’s say that the Wifi quality is not exactly fiber optic. We faced a different situation on each trip, so it’s hard to make a general statement. During Nomad Cruise 6 and 3 it was quite steady. On Nomad Cruise 4 it was good most of the times, but wasn’t working at all for 3 days. We’ve become very cautious after the wifi-connection completely collapsed on NC 2 – too many of us used it at the same time. We’re in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after all!

We recommend being prepared. Don’t expect anything – appreciate everything is pretty much the ideal strategy here.

While this sounds like a total downer, we were surprised to learn, that a large number of participants used all of NC III for a digital detox. They only ever logged in during island stops and other than that kept their devices off. They reported a positive change in their behavior, increased their level of relaxation, and many said that it felt like the first true vacation in years.

WiFi Rates

Satellite Internet doesn’t come cheap, which is why we recommend a digital detox-focused on making connections with those on board. All those who do, usually feel relaxed for the first time in a very long time and are really able to get stuff done, as they aren’t distracted by incessant emails or Facebook notifications.

For those who cannot live without it, you’re looking at about €50-€70 for 250 minutes. There is also an unlimited Wifi plan available, and you can get online for about €12-€15 per day. To get the unlimited pack, you will have to pay the €12-€15 per day for each day of the cruise from the first day you buy it until our arrival and can only access the Wifi with one device at a time. Prices are subject to change and examples out of our experience.

Laundry

The ship does offer a laundry service, but it’s quite expensive. We suggest you wait for a special deal. Every couple of days Pullmantur offers a special for their participants. Calculate between €15-30 per medium load.

Land Excursions

We will have 3 stops during our trip: in Alicante, Tenerife and in Mindelo. At each location, we will have a – mostly free – program suggestion and a recommended venue to meet-up on shore. We will announce all details about this a few weeks before departure.

This will be our itinerary for the days on land:

  • Tuesday 20/Nov/18 Alicante,Spain 10:00am – 4:00pm
  • Friday 23/Nov/18 Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain 10:00am – 6:00pm
  • Monday 26/Nov/18 Mindelo, Cape Verde 9:00am – 5:00pm

CONFERENCE

Program

We’ve launched our preliminary program and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Literally. Check it out and remember – this is only our preliminary program, there are more talks and workshops to be added!
If you’re interested in a topic, just mark the date and time in your calendar. No need to register or sign up – all you have to do is showing up in time. It’s that easy.

Meet-ups

Meet-ups are the core of the self-organized part of the program. YOU decide what they look like and what they are about. You can use the communication walls on board to communicate your suggestion.

Mastermind Specials

We’re organizing our first Mastermind Specials on Nomad Cruise 7. This will be a unique event and more information on it will follow shortly.

Failure Talks

After the very successful first edition on Nomad Cruise 6, we are organizing a night of failure again, where the speakers will tell us about the biggest failures they experienced, the most important lessons they learnt, and how they got back up and tried again. And again. And again. Please apply at program@nomadcruise.com if you would like to share your story.

Icebreakers

More than 450 nomads make a pretty large group. Hence it is very important to us to break the ice early with networking games and interactive programs so that we can get to know each other better and faster.

AFTER THE CRUISE

Disembarkation

The disembarkation can be about as dragging as the embarkation. You will have to place your big luggage items outside your cabin by 3 am on the last night before arrival. People check-out according to the color of their bag tag. All Nomads will have the same bag tag color. You need one tag for every bag. Bags without tag will automatically be transferred to the airport. Trust us, we have experience with that.
We will tell you all you need to know about the check-out process during our Closing Ceremony.

Meet-up Plans

If your schedule is flexible, we recommend you to book two-four additional weeks in your calendar and stick around in Brazil with us.

After disembarking the ship, hop on one of the buses we organize to take us to our first stop, the beautiful town of Porto de Galinhas. We suggest you to spend a few days there, then head over to one of our 3 meet-up destinations – or visit them all:)

We will organize official Meet-ups on the following dates:

  • Jericoacoara – 7th / 14th of December (check Azul Airlines for direct flights from Recife)
  • Pipa – 7th / 14th of December
  • Rio de Janeiro – 7th / 14th of December

If you’re looking for a special event at a special place, join the Mastermind Camp or the Life in Balance Retreat, organized by some of our beloved cruisers.

Our final reunion will be an epic New Year’s Eve celebration in Rio de Janeiro. It’s only up to you whether you join us to one or more of the Nomad Cruise Camps or travel around by yourself and meet us in Rio at the end of the year.

Check out our detailed Brazil guide and start planning your stay!

So, what will your roadmap look like?:)
